Here Are 5 Facts You Must Know About The Al Wathba Fossil Dunes

The UAE is full of surprises, not only will you find here great architectural wonders but also amazing natural landscapes. One such not so famous landscape is the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes. The fossil dunes are a wonderful collection of one-of-a-kind and interesting formations found among undulating dunes near Al Wathba. The region is easily accessible by any form of transport simply enter “fossil dunes” into Waze or Google Maps. These fossils are found in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Here are 5 facts that you might not know about the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes:

It has 1700+ fossil dunes spread over 7 sq-km of land, it is one of the largest concentrations in the emirate. 

These formations have been estimated to date back to the last ice age, 120,000 years ago. 

Al Wathba is the 1st reserve of its kind in the entire UAE. 

This place is an important habitat for many wildlife species. 

It is a significant and rare element of the natural history of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. 

Bonus fact: it is nominated to be listed on UNESCO’s Global List of Geoparks.
