Dubai is on a mission to more than double its metro stations by 2040. Currently, the Dubai Metro boasts 64 stations spread over 84 square kilometres. However, according to an exciting announcement by the Government of Dubai last month, this number will soar to 140 stations covering 228 square kilometres by 2040. And that’s not all! By 2030, we’ll see 96 stations spanning 140 square kilometres. Just imagine – in less than 6 years from now how widely the city will be connected, making all our lives much easier. Come with me, and I’ll tell you all the amazing details you need to know about what’s to come in Dubai.

These ambitious plans are part of the Executive Council of Dubai’s broader vision to develop areas around metro stations, aiming to reduce carbon emissions in the emirate to 16 tonnes per capita. This development is also expected to boost the local economy by creating more opportunities and attracting more people to live and work near the stations. The vision includes adding more residential, commercial, office, and service spaces around the metro network.
Previous Dubai metro expansion plans hinted at three new lines: the Purple Line, Gold Line, and Pink Line. The Purple Line was expected to run from the north to the south, including Al Maktoum International Airport. The Gold and Pink Lines were proposed to cover routes from the west to the east of Dubai. However, it remains to be confirmed if these lines will be part of the comprehensive Dubai Metro plans.

While specific locations for all the new stations haven’t been disclosed. Here is what we know so far – Currently, Dubai Metro operates two lines: the Green Line, which covers areas from Al Qusais to Deira Creek, and the Red Line, which connects the DXB airports to Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Expo 2020. The new Blue Line is under construction, stretching over 30 km, with 15.5 km underground and 14.5 km above ground. This line will feature 14 stations, including three interchange stations, and will integrate with the existing Red and Green lines.
Dubai’s vision for an expansive metro network promises a more connected, eco-friendly, and economically vibrant future. Stay tuned to Gulf Buzz for more updates as this exciting project unfolds!
