Everything You Need To Know About Dubai’s Alcohol Rules: Free License, Tax Cuts & Discounts

In fact, Dubai has recently scrapped the 30% tax on alcohol purchases, leading to a reduction in prices at stores and restaurants.

To make your alcohol purchase experience as smooth as possible, here’s what you need to know:

1. Who can purchase alcohol in Dubai?

Non-Muslim expats and tourists over the age of 21 are allowed to purchase alcohol in Dubai.

2. What are the alcohol purchase requirements?

To purchase alcohol in Dubai, you’ll need a free license (available to anyone over the age of 21) and be prepared to pay a 5% Value Added Tax on purchases. If you’re a resident, you’ll need to provide a valid Emirates ID, while tourists will need a valid passport.

3. What is the alcohol purchase limit?

The individual alcohol spending limit is based on income generated, with the allowance determined upon approval of the application for the free alcohol license.

4. What is the Dubai Duty Free alcohol allowance?

If you’re passing through Dubai airport, you’re allowed to bring in 4 litres or 2 cartons of beer (each consisting of 24 cans, not exceeding 355 ml for each can or its equivalent) duty-free.

Alcohol can be purchased from any licensed MMI, African + Eastern store and Dubai Duty Free. These stores are located across the emirate, with locations including Jumierah Golf Estates, Dubai Hills Mall, Al Wasl, and more.
