Riding an E-scooter around the city is so fun! But earlier this month an announcement regarding this was made. The authorities announced that you will be needing a permit for driving an E-scooter around Dubai. You can apply for this permit by visiting the site launched by the RTA and you will also have to pass an online test. From Thursday, April 28, you’ll be able to apply for e-scooter permits directly through the RTA platform.
A free permit is required for all tourists and residents who want to ride e-scooters in Dubai, but there are some exclusions. You do not need to apply for the permit if you already have a driver’s licence. If you do not intend to use your e-scooter on designated streets and will only use sidewalks or cycling paths, you will not be required to apply for a permit.
To obtain the free permit, you must first complete an online course that includes topics such as scooter technical specifications and requirements, as well as basic safety rules. It also explains where scooters are allowed to be used and defines traffic signs relevant to scooters. Anyone who rides an e-scooter without permission (or a driver’s licence) is breaking the law, which can result in an AED 200 punishment.
